Can i use play sand in my 18 ft. above ground swimming pool sand filter?

i was told to use silica sand but i thought maybe i could use play sand since it alot cheaper to buy .if not what should i use?

Answers:

1Absolutely not! Pool filter sand is sort of shaped like a snowflake which allows it to filter out debris while letting water pass through it. You will plug up the filter if you use play sand and in a very short time there will be no water flow.I've been in the pool business for 30 years and have come across this problem numerous times in the past.
